PETA demands astronomers quit referring to Sirius as ‘Dog Star’

PETA’s indignation aside, it does look like a dog…

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is now taking its quest to protect animals’ rights and save them from dinner plates to a whole new world.

That’s because PETA has now filed a formal petition with the International Astronomical Union requesting it issue the star Sirius a new nickname.

The star, the second-brightest star in the sky after the sun, has long been called “The Dog Star” due to its location in the constellation Canis Major, or Big Dog.

“We believe it’s degrading to Dachshunds, Great Danes, Doberman Pinschers and other dogs to have their name flippantly used like this,” said television personality Ricki Lake, a longtime PETA member. “This is unacceptable. We hope someday to give animals not only full rights, but also to extend that protection should human beings ever colonize planets in this solar system or in others.”

People Ricki Lake

Ricki Lake’s not smiling over how astronomy treats animals.

Instead, Lake added, PETA proposes the IAU issue Sirius the nickname “The No-Nonsense Star” since its name is often mispronounced “serious”.

The IAU, which meets later this summer, had no immediate comment.

Lake also told Ponderings from Pluto that PETA would also like the IAU to change other astronomical names that exploit animals (besides Canis Major, the Leo, Taurus and Pisces constellations).

I’ve never heard of anything more moronic. For ones name to be used as a star designation would seem an honor, if an animal actually cared about such things.
“Big” describes the star and differentiates if from the smaller one.

  2. Oh PETA, the endless hours of entertainment you provide is always welcome. This ranks right up there with human breast milk in ice cream and the robotic groundhog. But please start thinking about mental help because you’ve obviously lost one more can from the six pack.

Dear Lick Me Rake, You obviously need some extra brain cells to keep the one you have company. Lets think about Taurus the bull, Cancer the crab, Ursa Major (bear) and many many more. How about Hercules and Orion, star groups named after people. How about the dog fish, imagine a fish named after a dog, how degrading to the poor fish. Stars and constellations have been named after animals since before recorded time. It is part of history on earth. As much as I keep an open mind for PETA, you guys are way ‘off on a comet’ somewhere this time.

Dear Peta, thank you for taking the time to address this. Just today my Dog was begging for equal rights to my pillow, I thought at first that maybe she should get a job to buy her own. But the Federal govenrment will not allow her to work unless she provides a SS#. Could you assist me in getting her one?

    F**k PETA

  6. SaturnAndItsRings says:

You won’t find me calling it the “No nonsense star”…..don’t give a crap what they say!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Malcolm says:

I think it’s funny that they show an illustration of a lazy dog laying down. Canis Major is supposed to be following Orion. He has four legs in a walking motion if you look closely at the constellation. And by the way PETA, Orion is hunting and his bow is aimed right at Taurus because Orion knows beef is tasty.

I think it’s funny that people don’t see that this is tongue-in-cheek! They’re kidding! Have a sense of humor.

(Of course, dogs should have rights. Not the same rights as humans. Right now it’s legal for someone to pull out a gun and shoot their dog, just on a whim. It’s legal for puppy mills to keep tons of dogs in tiny cages living in their own filth.)

Have just bought a cao de gado transmontana, Portuguese mastiff, and being as he is gonna be a huge dog i thought i would look for a name that would be appropriate and Sirius is it!!!!!!! These dogs shine out above all the rest in Portugal. Totally agree with sistaelle but as my dog is more interested in playing and eating and the tone of my voice as to understand right from wrong, he is not aware of why he is called Sirius and dont care. I am all for protecting animals against physical or mental cruelty but i also feel the human need for helping my fellow man, Ricki, get a mental evaluation!!!!!!

  11. Nikki says:

Peta is too extreme! They b*tch about everything. Funny thing is, how the hell does naming a star a dog star harm either the star or dogs? Dumbasses, seriously. They just like to hear themselves b*tch.

  12. Silver says:

God, I always thought PETA was full of BS, but this really takes the cake…
