Space Mate will soon join the Paper Mate fold.
Pen manufacturer Paper Mate has announced plans to enter into the galactic market for ink pens, creating its version of the space pen.
The space pen was developed for NASA to be used to write in no gravity.
Due out in the summer of—fittingly enough—2010, Paper Mate will launch Space Mate.
Space Mate is available as a click ball-point pen in black, blue, red, purple or green.
“We are delighted with what we’ve come up with and feel this pen will sell very well,” said the estate of longtime Paper Mate CEO Patrick J. Frawley in a statement.
Originally, astronauts wrote in space with pencils, only to find that the wooden barrels posed fire hazards while the graphite “lead” conducted electricity.
The Space Mate will retail at $25.99.
Paper Mate is owned by Sanford, a Newell Rubbermaid company.
