Saying he wants to be “hip” and continue attracting younger generations to his television programs, longtime television personality Bryant Gumbel announced he is altering the spelling of his first name.
“After all these years in broadcasting, I’ve decided ‘Bryant’ sounds too formal,” Gumbel said in an exclusive interview with Ponderings from Pluto. “Many have considered me an egotistical, vain, selfish, snobbish, snooty arrogant stuffed shirt, and I intend to change that perception.”
The former longtime Today Show host, who now hosts Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO, says in the fall he will be known as Bryan Gumbel.
The show, of course, will then be known as Real Sports with Bryan Gumbel.
Goodbye, Bryant, the man David Letterman once described as so dull and sophisticated that he (Bryant) would spend a weekend alphabetizing his colognes. Hello, Bryan, the carefree type whose colognes stop at the first letter of the alphabet—Axe.
Bryan Gumbel. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
“Of course it does,” snapped Gumbel.
At this stage, the broadcaster says while he likes the new name, he plans to use it as a stage name only. Legally, he’ll still be known as Bryant Gumbel.
“That’s the name my father and mother gave me, so obviously it’s still very important to me,” he explained.
